Commander Silek of the John S. Mosby Camp #1237 wanted to announce
their Annual Dinner honoring General Robert E. Lee on the Virginia
Courier and sent me the announcement after several attempts to post the
invitation. <br>

As information, the Virginia Courier is a one-way announcement system
used by the Virginia Division officers and only a few have the
authority to send out an announcement. If your camp has an announcement
or event that you would like to submit for consideration to be sent on
the VA Courier, please send it to either myself, or Division Adj. Mike
Rose. <br>

everyone. The speaker is very good and I am sure it will be a wonderful
evening and hope that you and members of your camp can attend. Please

Holien is the professional military historian for Joint Base Myer -
Henderson Hall in the Metro Washington area. This command encompasses
Fort Myer, Virginia (the only Civil War fort from the Defenses of
Washington still in existence today as a functioning fort. It is next
to Arlington National Cemetery); Henderson Hall - headquarters United
States Marine Corps and Ft Lesley J. McNair in the District of Columbia
(Home to the National Defense University and third oldest Army post in
the world dating to1791). Holien has been a professional military
historian for 30 years during which time he was the civilian historian
for Staff Rides to Civil War battlefields for Secretary of the Army
John Marsh. He also did the radio narration for the 125th Anniversaries
of lst Manassas, Balls Bluff, Gettysburg, New Market and the Monocacy.
Kim graduated from Bethel College in TN with a major in Broad Area
of Social Sciences and a double minor in History and Psychology.
He completed his MA in 1984 at George Mason University under Prof. Joe
Harsh and did his thesis on the Battle of Balls Bluff and its Political
Aftermath which he turned into a book that has gone through three
printings. . He is also an honors graduate of the Army Management Staff
College at Ft Belvoir in 1997. Past president of both the DC and
Alexandria Civil War Round Tables, Kim is a founder of the Friends of
Ft Ward in 1981 and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the
Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance (<a href="http:///"><span
style="color: black;">www.latcra.org</span></a>)
for the upcoming Sesquicentennial. Kim was a participant in the Civil
War Centennial of 1961 - 65 and just recently portrayed LTC Robert E.
Lee for the 150th anniversary of the capture of John Brown at Harpers
Ferry. He is a descendant of Private John Wild of Mosby's Rangers and
Capt. Gustav Schimmel of the 15th New York Heavy Artillery. Kim is
currently finishing his next book on the campaign, battle and aftermath
of lst Manassas.</span></p>

Robert E. Lee is one of the world's great battle captains and yet he
lost the battle of Gettysburg and the South lost its war for
independence. Could the former be due to his participation in the
Mexican War and the latter due to the interference of those in
Richmond? In just eighteen months from now we will be commemorating the
battle of 1<sup>st</sup> Manassas whose victory for the South was due
to Robert E. Lee but he was not physically there. How could this be?
You live in the Shenandoah Valley site of Stonewall Jackson's immortal
Valley Campaign and yet again it is due to Robert E. Lee but he was not
physically here. How could this be? Lee's critics are a legion these
days and yet few, if any of them, have ever been in uniform much less
in command of an entire army with the weight of responsibility that it
entails. Lee's defeat of McClellan at the very gates of Richmond, his
masterpiece of maneuver against Pope at Second Manassas, his moral
victory on the banks of Antietam Creek, his thrashing of Burnside at
Fredericksburg, the victorious dividing of the Army of Northern
Virginia four times at Chancellorsville in the face of an enemy twice
its size, the ambushing of Grant in the Wilderness and the crushing
defeat of his legions at Cold Harbor, the daring raid on Washington in
the Summer of 1864 and the true meaning of Appomattox will be
discussed. For those of you who heard the 2008 talk on Robert E. Lee
the Man this will be a companion bookend talk. </span></p>
