<LI>Central Virginia recognizes Jefferson Davis with a monument at Davis Circle
on Monument Avenue, the White House of the Confederacy, Lee-Davis High School,
Jeff Davis Highway, and probably other ways. This week the American Civil War
Center at Historic Tredegar voted to accept a Davis statue offered by the Sons
of Confederate Veterans. The owner of the museum site will make the final call.
The center has not committed to placing the statue in a specific place. The
sculpture could become part of exhibits examining how the Civil War has been
remembered.
<LI>The story of the Civil War's retelling fascinates, and enlightens. Although
heroes emerge, the saga flatters few. The Sons may rue this day.
<LI>The continuing drama at Virginia Commonwealth University emphasizes the
virtue of transparency.
<LI>Speaking of higher education: Classes soon will open at Virginia's colleges
and universities -- i.e., before Labor Day. If the General Assembly tried to
impose the infamous Labor Day law on the colleges, powerful school presidents
would erupt. Yet every argument for applying the Labor Day restriction to public
schools through 12th grade applies to colleges. That senators and delegates
decline to tell the colleges when to start their semesters exposes the law as an
absolute fraud.
<LI>By the way, football practice and other high school extracurriculars open
before Labor Day as well. Yes sir, the Assembly has the right priorities. We
should add this: The attitudes of the statesmen and -women in Capitol Square
likely reflect the attitudes of a debased culture.
<LI>We are not surprised that Jay Stegmaier's first year as Chesterfield's
county administrator proved a smooth transition. Stegmaier's experience and
professionalism ensured that the installation of a new Board of Supervisors
would prove smooth as well. </LI></DIV><!-- sphereit end -->
