The Urquhart-Gillette Camp # 1471 Sons of Confederate Veterans in
Southampton County, Virginia has launched a massive campaign throughout
this area to attempt to purchase General William Mahone' homeplace,
which is located in Courtland, VA on Main Street directly across the
street from the Historic Southampton County Courthouse where Nat Turner
was tried and sentenced in 1831 to hanging.
Our camp is desperately in need of your support in the way of financial
donations. We will need to raise upwards of $200,000 to purchase the
Historic Mahone Tavern, which was built by Samuel Kello in 1794 when he
was the second Clerk of the Court here of Southampton County, Virginia..
General William Mahone was one of the greatest persons ever to have come
out of Southampton County . His devotion to the South during the war as
Major General gave him the distinction as being"The Hero of the Battle
of the Crater"saving Petersburg, Va. from the Northern invaders. Our
desire is to preserve and protect this historic Virginia landmark
while the same time , honor and remember General Mahone for what he
accomplished before he died in 1895, the wealthiest man in the country.
Having a monthly meeting place for the Urquhart-Gillette Camp and the
Jerusalem Chapter of the UDC will be a wonderful accomplishment for the
Urquhart-Gillette camp #1471.
Please join our campaign by sending a donation to the Urquhart-Gillette
Camp #1471, Post Office Box 1, Courtland, Va. 23837. Any help or aid
that you can give to us to help us accomplish this major task would be
greatly appreciated in more ways than any words can ever be explained. I
am,
Most Sincerely,
Tommy Simmons,
Commander
Urquhart-Gillette
Camp #1471
