*Old Richmonder Wants Battle Flag Put Back*
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Regarding the editorial "A Banner Furled": I was raised in Richmond all
my life. I grew up in old Richmond, a true Southern city and Mecca of
Confederate history -- not a Mecca for Northern transplants and
politically correct wimps. I am a veteran of the U.S. Army, Vietnam era,
a proud American and Southerner, and a proud descendant of a Virginia
Confederate soldier. The fact the "Battle Flag" mysteriously was not put
back into the old House chamber is not only a disgrace, but could only
happen under Gov. Tim Kaine's ultra-liberal administration.
Seeing as Virginia and the Carolinas are rapidly going Yankee liberal
(two Democratic governors in row in Virginia) due to the never-ending
flow of transplants in our state, this newspaper and the P.C. police
don't fool anybody. Native Virginians (the true minority) who are white
and Southern male are being portrayed as dumb good ole boys who can't
match historical fact with the ideological views of the educated.
Wrong! As a weekend tour guide and front-desk person for over 20 years
(Richmond Discoveries, the Richmond Center, and The Museum of the
Confederacy) I do know Southern history. What the current politicians of
this state are doing to cover up Confederate history is spineless and
one reason why Richmond continues to be a ship without a captain.
Virginia lost over 17,000 soldiers in the War Between the States, had
over 170,000 enlist in the Confederate Army and Navy, and suffered like
no other Southern state -- not to mention Richmond was the glue that
kept the Southern Confederacy together for four years.
This devotion and sacrifice deserves to be remembered in the old House
chamber. Return the flag that Virginia's sons fought and died for, a
battle flag of honor and sacrifice.
Linny Kammeter. Richmond.
