Del. Bill Howell is hardly an 'elitist' 

Recent personal attacks--as opposed to dispassionate issue discussion--on
Speaker Bill Howell have been egregious ["Confederate flag flap erupts,"
Sept. 13].

He has been attacked as both an elitist neoconservative by political
partisans and as a destroyer of Southern heritage by a Sons of Confederate
Veterans state leader.

Mr. Howell deals with such rubbish with philosophical and Christian
forbearance. 

I last saw this "elitist" hauling out bags of garbage from a Stafford County
Historical Society Christmas meeting he and his wife have selflessly hosted
for many years. 

May I suggest that during the next 13 months of political drivel, we might
try a new standard: If you don't know whom or what you're talking about, you
may wish to actually make some personal contact or do some research.

These people in political office are not virtual piñatas for verbal
assaults. 

The SCV's Brag Bowling's attack on Speaker Howell was over the issue of
displaying the Confederate battle flag in Richmond's Capitol. It just so
happens that the flag selected was the Second National Flag (which includes
the battle flag in its canton!). That means it was a non-issue made into an
issue. 

Might I suggest that the SCV's efforts might be better employed at
fundraising for the Museum of the Confederacy (which they seem bent on
hindering) and the Central Virginia Battlefield Trust, which is busy saving
the land on which their ancestors fought.
