Members of the 58^th Va. Infantry reenacting group are currently
raising money to have an original 58^th Va. Battleflag preserved.
Members of the 58th are also SCV members, representing such camps as the
Summers-Koontz Camp # 490 in Luray, Va., The Strasburg Guards # 1587,
and The Clinton-Hatcher Camp # 21 in Leesburg, Va.
The flag is in storage in the basement of the Museum of the Confederacy
and is in too bad of shape to be taken out and displayed. We have paid
for the flag to be evaluated and the cost to preserve it is $23, 350.
In the 1940's, the flag was backed with conservation stitching to keep
it together. Unfortunately, now, It has been discovered that the
conservation stitching is helping the flag deteriorate quicker. If we
don't do something about this now, we will lose this very important part
of our heritage.
Over the past year, thanks to the many different SCV camp meetings that
we have attended, we have raised quite a bit towards the preservation of
the flag. But, we still have a long way to go! The camps that we have
visited have been very charitable to our worthy cause. For this, we are
very grateful. Although we have been to many different camps, there are
still many, many SCV camps within the state of Va. that we are hoping
will be willing to help us in this endeavor.
We are hoping that many of you will check out our website at
www.58va.com <http://www.58va.com> and see what we are all about. There
cannot be a more honorable thing we can do for these soldiers. The
battle reenactments are nice, as well as the Living History's. But,
saving their flag that they cried and died for, is the most honorable
thing we can do for them.
If any camp is interested in a presentation for their camp, and is
willing to help us save this flag, please check out our website and let
us know. In addition to donations, our camp members are currently
selling t-shirts with the 58th flag on the front and back. These are
really nice shirts and we have had no complaints about them at all. We
will be glad to bring them along and see if any of your camp members may
be interested in buying one. Every dime we make goes towards the flag!
