Remembering the fallen
By CHRISTOPHER BROOKE Staff Reporter
CANA - Each white cross on the roadside bore the name of a Carroll
County soldier who fought for a country or cause they believed in.
The crosses themselves are simple - two boards fastened together,
painted white, with a metal spike in the bottom for driving them into
the ground more easily.
Each cross has a different name written on it in black on the cross bar
with the name of a war on the post. About half are scribed with the
words "Civil War," and topped with a small Confederate flag.
World War II appears on many of the others. Those that honored soldiers
from other wars in U.S. history got a miniature Stars and Stripes.
By themselves, the individual crosses being set up by the Rough and
Readys Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp in Cana last Thursday wouldn't
attract much attention. But the more than 200 crosses set up along U.S.
52, many in front of Blue Ridge Concrete, together make a statement
about sacrifice for Memorial Day, says Glenn Moore of the camp.
Organizers invited residents of Carroll County to share names of loved
ones or ancestors who fought for what they believed in.
People today can exercise their rights because of what was done by
soldiers represented by the crosses, Moore said. Each one deserves
respect for what they did.
"It's not so much so much honoring the soldiers, but remembering the
cost," he said.
Many names on the crosses are connected by blood and family, Moore
noted. Some represented families who sent several generations to fight
in wars.
Organizers thanked Riverside Builders of Mount Airy, N.C., for the wood,
Blue Ridge Concrete and others along U.S. 52 for making their land
available, and Po Boys Variety, Nolen's Pottery and Richardson's Pottery
for paint used for the crosses.
The Rough and Readys will save the crosses for future Memorial Day
observances.
"We hope this gets a little bigger every year," Moore said. "I'd love to
see it stretch from one end of Carroll County to the other on 52, from
the North Carolina line all the way past Hillsville."
