Virginia Capitol Flag Update (forward to all camp members and 
distribution lists)

Dear Confederate Flag Supporters,

The excuses for the removal of the Confederate Flag from the Old 
Delegates chamber in the state capitol building are beginning to roll 
in.  If you haven't contacted your delegate do so now (contact 
information is below).  Many of you need to follow up with your delegate 
and demand that this action be reversed, do not be bluffed into 
accepting this attack on the memory of our ancestors.  The flag was 
placed there in their honor.   It is almost unbelieveable that the name 
of Douglas Southall Freeman has been used to justify this.

The excuses which have been received from the office of Bruce Jamerson, 
Clerk of the House, are also being utilized by the delegates, some of 
whom simply want to explain Mr. Jamerson's reasoning for removing the 
flag, but don't intend to do anything about the situation.  We need to 
make it clear that just because some "process" was used for throwing the 
flag out, it was an arbitrary and wrong decision on the part of Mr. 
Jamerson.   A wrong that must be immediately corrected.

Since many of you are being sent Mr. Jamerson's response on the matter 
to a letter sent on behalf of the Virginia Division, that initial letter 
is copied below.  Please review it, Commander Earnest's message below, 
and TAKE ACTION!  Contact the officals requested below.

Dear Mr. Jamerson,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to speak with me regarding 
the Old Delegates Chamber in the capitol building.  The Sons of 
Confederate Veterans is dedicated to the promotion of history and 
therefore we commend your efforts to renovate the chamber in a manner 
more consistent with its historic use.  However, we do find it very 
distressing that the Confederate flag has not been restored to the 
chamber where it has historically resided.

It is our belief that the flag was placed in the chamber as a war 
memorial to those Virginians who fought and died under it at the call of 
their elected representatives in the General Assembly.  There remain 
several pieces of statuary in the room regarding the war period, but 
these are likenesses entirely of notable people.  There was no physical 
way to honor the sacrifices of thousands of common people in such a 
manner.  The logical tribute was the placement of the banner under which 
they all served.

While we would like to see the flag returned to its original placement 
in the room, we understand your desire to have the speaker's platform 
appear more historically accurate.  Therefore, we would propose that the 
flag be placed elsewhere in the room in a dignified manner.  We would be 
willing to provide a flag more historically accurate than the flag found 
formerly in the chamber, of the Army of Northern Virginia design, 
including the necessary hardware.  We would further offer to provide a 
period correct Virginia state flag and hardware to accompany the 
Confederate flag.  We appreciate your consideration and look forward to 
resolving this matter.

We need your help!

You may already know that the Old State Capital Building has recently 
gone through an extensive renovation.  The Old Delegates Chamber has 
been restored and the statue of General Lee is back in it's proper place 
facing the Speaker's Chair.  All is in place except one missing item.  
It should come as no surprise that the BATTLE FLAG that was there before 
the restoration is not there now.

The decision to remove the flag was not put to a vote.  It was not made 
public.  It was done by one man.  Bruce Jamerson is the clerk of the 
House of Delegates.  He is the man who made this decision without 
consulting anyone.  He can not be allowed to get away with this. 

Virginia left the Union for only one reason.  That reason was defense 
against invasion.  Every Virginian who fought from Generals Lee and 
Jackson to the lowest private did so only to defend Virginia.  THE 
BATTLE FLAG is not a Confederate National Flag.  It is the soldiers 
flag.   That flag represents all the men who fought for Virginia.  To 
remove it is to try to erase the memory of these brave men.  Contact 
your delegates and let them know your feelings.  They knew nothing of 
this, but they can correct it. 

Bruce Jamerson did this all on his own.  The Delegates can put pressure 
on him to restore the flag.  Let them know that we can put pressure on 
them at the polls.  If we don't stop this now, perhaps Bruce Jamerson 
will decided to remove the statue of General Lee and other statues of 
our heroes.  We must stop this now!  And we need your help.

1) Contact Bruce Jamerson's office
Let him know that you believe he has arbitrarily removed a war memorial 
from the capitol in violation of his responsibilities.  His staff may 
reply this was done for "historical" reasons to make the Old Delegates 
Chamber appear as it did in 1830-1860.  The room was set aside by law in 
the 1930's for the display of memorials all of which would not have been 
in the room in the 1800's.  Under that logic, any other memorial could 
be similarly disposed of.

2) Contact Speaker of the House and express your displeasure in the fact 
that Mr. Jamerson has removed the Confederate Flag which was placed 
there as a war memorial without the advice or consent of the House of 
Delegates.  Request that the Speaker direct Mr. Jamerson to restore the 
flag immediately.

3) Contact your local Delegate
Express your opinion again, but make sure to emphasize the fact that 
while you as a voter cannot influence Mr. Jamerson, your delegate can 
because the the Clerk serves at the pleasure of the Delegates.  Request 
your Delegate to withold support for reappointing Mr. Jamerson if this 
issue is not resolved in our favor.
