Only a few more applications needed

Time is running out to pre-order your Robert E. Lee Virginia license plates.
Sure, you can order them after that, but if you are one of the first 350
to send an application and payment to the Robert E. Lee License Plate
Initiative, you will have not only the plates, but also the satisfaction
of knowing that you helped save the initiative from extinction.
"My phone hasn't stopped ringing over this issue," said Keith Morris,
commander of Isle of Wight Avengers Camp No. 14 of Sons of Confederate
Veterans.
"There is no other organization better suited to honor Robert E. Lee and
his legacy and what he did for Virginia than the Sons of Confederate
Veterans, and that's why we are sponsoring this license plate," he said.
The organization has until July 31 - less than two months from now - to
collect all 350 prepaid applications needed for the Virginia Department
of Motor Vehicles to begin production of the plates. After two years of
working on the initiative, they only have a few to go, said Morris.
The legislation has already been passed to get the plates. All that
needs to happen is to get those few more applications.
"It's available to the entire public," said Morris. "If you have a
vehicle registered in Virginia, you are eligible to pre-order the plate.
"You can't go to DMV online or to their brick-and-mortar building and
order it because they can't sell you what they don't have."
Once the 350 paid applications are collected, Morris will deliver them
to the DMV in Richmond, after which the plate will be produced and
mailed to those who have put in applications, and it will also then
become available to order through the DMV. The DMV is not responsible
for collecting the first 350 applications - only the sponsoring
organization is.
There are already 180 specialty plates in Virginia, honoring colleges
and universities, Virginia heritage, butterflies, autumn leaves, friends
of Tibet and even Jimmy Buffett fans.
"I'd like it to be 181," said Morris.
The cost to get a Robert E. Lee license plate is $10 for the assigned
lettering and numbering, or $20 to designate your own personalized
lettering. To put in an application and help out the Robert E. Lee
License Plate Initiative, here's what you do:
1) Go to www.scvva.org.
2) Print out the DMV form available on the site for download.
3) Make your check payable to "Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative."
4) Check the license plate category "Special Interest" and write "New
Robert E. Lee Plate" in the space provided.
5) Check whether you would like special lettering or assigned lettering
(if doing special lettering, only 6 characters are allowed).
6) Ensure all listed owners of the automobile for which you are
purchasing the plate are included and have signed the form.
7) Ensure you have checked your insurance coverage option correctly.
8) Payment must be by check or money order.
9) Mail payment and application to Keith Morris, Commander
Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative
130 Kings Point Drive
Suffolk, Va., 23434.
"I can't think of a finer man, a finer Virginian, than General Robert E.
Lee," said Morris.
