Ayers Comes From Solid Stock

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

I was pleased to read about Edward Ayers, the University of Richmond's new
president. That "Southern twang that rings like a fiddle through the
foothills" is music to my ears. 

My own father, also an educator, grew up in the tiny town of Newland, N.C.
-- just a few very country miles from Ayers' native Burnsville. Through his
many years as an academian, which included a few "Yankee years" in New York
earning a doctorate from Cornell, and ultimately as vice president and vice
provost of Clemson University, my dad never lost that beautiful,
characteristic accent.

He also had a penchant for telling stories, and a dry hillbilly wit. Just
weeks before an as-yet-undiagnosed brain tumor took his life, I drove him to
the bank and noticed he was struggling to get out of the car. When I came
around to help him, I realized his seat belt was still buckled. As I reached
in to unlatch it, he looked up at me with a wry grin and said, "I'd look
awful foolish draggin' that car in behind me, wouldn't I?"

There's gold in them thar hills. I wish Ayers a very warm welcome to
Richmond.

Please Spare Us The Sarcastic Asides

Regarding your editorial on communal postal delivery stations: 

Your point that it might be time to think "outside the box" about ways the
Postal Service could save money is valid. But what purpose is served by
inserting the word "urp" when describing experiments with community delivery
stations such as those "in (urp!) trailer parks"?

Sarcastic and derogatory asides have no place in serious editorials.

SCV Makes Offer To Maintain Cemetery

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

The City of Richmond has an unpolished jewel few people are aware of. The
Confederate section of Oakwood Cemetery in Church Hill is the final resting
place of more than 17,000 soldiers, and is one of the largest Confederate
cemeteries in the nation. 

Those buried in Oakwood died defending this city in the battles around
Richmond in 1862 and 1864. The Sons of Confederate Veterans want nothing
more than to provide proper and respectful care for these men and have
offered the city a chance to save beleaguered Richmond taxpayers all
associated costs of maintenance of the cemetery by executing a maintenance
partnership agreement similar to ones already in effect at St. John's Church
and Maymont Park. This is a win-win situation for all parties.

Cemetery maintenance is what the SCV is all about. The city will be relieved
of caring for a large Confederate cemetery, yet will retain ownership. To
date, this seemingly ideal partnership has been stymied by city officials
determined to hold on to their turf.

We ask Mayor Wilder to meet with the SCV and leapfrog the lower-level
bureaucrats who have hamstrung all efforts. Both the General Assembly and
the Virginia Department of Historic Resources support the SCV in the effort
to save Oakwood.

As a Korean War combat veteran, Mayor Wilder should appreciate a
well-maintained and respectful military cemetery. The SCV has nearly
$100,000 earmarked strictly for Oakwood and it sits in the bank, waiting for
this meeting.

Why Pass New Laws? Today's Aren't Enforced

In ordinary times, among reasonably intelligent and well-informed people,
the question of what to do with illegal aliens would not produce much
diversity of opinion. They are not here legally -- send them home. 

The fact that the Bush administration feels it needs an act of Congress,
which passed laws governing the protection of our borders long ago, to
enable it to act in the case of persons here illegally must indicate
something about the people running our country. Congress should not have to
re-argue settled questions to convince an uncertain executive branch to act.

If everyone in each and all of our state, federal, and local governments was
doing his job diligently and honestly and enforcing all laws currently in
place, we would have no drug problem, no alien problem, and possibly no 9/11
attack.

If we cannot enforce today's laws, how can we be certain tomorrow's will be
any better enforced?

I have owned a small business for 56 years, and have paid withholding taxes,
Social Security taxes, unemployment insurance, state withholding taxes,
etc., on every penny of wages, while thousands of small businesses are off
the books to their profits. I have seen very little enforcement of the laws
that many illegals evade. Can anyone believe that somewhere in the higher
levels of government, there is not some gentlemen's agreement to bypass
enforcement of these employment laws?

If the administration can pursue our invasion and occupation in Iraq, why
can't it track down illegal employment practices, send aliens without papers
home, and close our borders to illegal entry?
