Gentlemen:
Any proud Southerner should have known almost since birth, that January
19th 2007, would be the 200th Birthday of General Robert E. Lee.
I would hope that you would also have enough confidence in me and the
members of the Division Executive Council to know that we would plan to
commemorate this occasion in a big way. Well, we have!
Now we need you to do your part. All you have to do is be there. All the
details are in both the Old Dominion Voice and the Confederate Veteran
Magazine. You can also access this information on the Virginia Division
Web site located at http://www.scvva.org.
The number one reason to be there is because it is our duty and is no
more than General Lee deserves. The 2nd reason is to be seen. The media
will be on site and we have invited numerous elected officials. In the
future, you will ask us, and we will ask them for things that we would
like to see happen. We will want a bill passed to protect a cemetery or
a Confederate monument. What will their answer be when they remember
that only a hand full of us turned out to celebrate the 200th Birthday
of General Lee?
The 3rd reason is that you might just plain enjoy it. I don't know about
you all, but I know what I will tell my grandchildren about where I was
on General Lee's 200th Birthday. I am anxious to be in Richmond on the
12th to see the restoration of the Lee Monument. The 13th will be a busy
day in Lexington ending with a ball featuring the 2nd South Carolina
Band as seen in the movie Gods and Generals. On the actual birthday, the
19th, Patrick Falci (General A.P. Hill from the movie Gettysburg) will
speak to us about Generals Lee and Jackson. Everyone who attends will
receive a commemorative gift to remember the evening. A DVD documentary
will be available for sale featuring all three events. We have done all
we can do to mark this once ever occasion. Again, it is up to you to
make it all that it should be.
General Robert E. Lee told us the importance of doing our duty. General
Stephen D. Lee told us what our duty is. Will you do your duty?
