MAYOR,TOWN OFFICIALS PASS RESOLUTION
CREATING A CIVIL WAR WEEKEND IN APRIL<>

BUCHANAN,VA.: The Mayor of Buchanan, Tom Middlecamp, and members of the 
Town Council passed a joint resolution Monday night (February 12th) 
creating a Living History, Civil War Weekend in downtown Buchanan on 
April 27,28, and 29, 2007. The weekend event had been suggested by 
members of The Botetourt Artillery, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 
1701, as a way to help celebrate Confederate History Month in April and 
to remember the history and heritage of the Town.

Several SCV units are setting up an encampment in the downtown area and 
will include Living History impressions on Food and Cooking by the 28th 
Virginia in Roanoke; Medical efforts during the War, The Botetourt 
Artillery; Religious Importance , A Methodist circuit rider; Arms and 
Bullet Making; Camp Boredom; Prisoner of War Treatment, The Stonewall 
Brigade in Lexington; A display of period tents and shelter methods plus 
other presentations..

During the War, there was also a battle going on at home as people 
struggled to make ends meet. Local chapters of The United Daughters of 
the Confederacy will be making Living History presentations on various 
topics including: Shortages and Substitutes during the War; Clothing of 
the Period; Hand Quilting; Knitting; Wool Gathering, Carding and the 
Spinning Wheel use; Children at Home; and Health and Medical Care of the 
1860's.A Cannon battle simulation across the James River in the downtown 
area will be presented by units from Knibbs Battery in Richmond and the 
63rd Virginia's Marshall's Rifle unit from Grayson County in the 
approximate areas where General David Hunter's Union forces and 
Confederate General John McCausland's men clashed in June 1864 during 
the Battle of Buchanan.

The event will feature three days of all Civil War movies from full 
length films to short documentaries on the big screen at the downtown 
theater along with a possible Question and Answer session with one of 
the film's Directors and Producers, Shopkeepers dressed in period 
clothes offering special discounts , period music, and a host of other 
activities will round off the weekend event.

All SCV members, Civil War Reenactors and their families are invited to 
participate in this special weekend event. Free, grassy camp sites 
downtown on the James River are being offered for your period tents, 
presentations or just for your plain enjoyment. For a reserved camping

Town of Buchanan Civil War History Weekend Proclamation

 

   

Whereas the Town of Buchanan,Virginia served as an important center for 
trade and commerce  on The James River during the Civil War and...

     

Whereas  Buchanan Area residents called for and mustered their own 
militia in December 1859 for their protection and..

      

Whereas that militia unit entered service into the Civil War in January 
1860 as The Mountain Rifles with most of their members being from 
Buchanan...and

        

Whereas that unit became known as The Botetourt Artillery and served 
with honor  and distinction throughout the War being the only Virginia 
Unit to be involved with the 46-day siege of Vicksburg,Mississippi and ...

        

Whereas the resulting 1864 Battle of Buchanan resulted in Confederate 
General McCausland setting fire to the covered bridge to delay the 
oncoming forces of Union General David Hunter and some 30,000 Federal 
troops who occupied  the Town and several prominent properties including 
Oak Hill, the Presbyterian Manse, the Anchorage and finally burned Mount 
Joy home of Col. John Thomas Anderson before leaving...

 

And Whereas the Town of Buchanan has three sites recognized with markers 
as part of State of Virginia's Civil War Trails sites and...

        

Whereas the remains of almost 100 Confederate soldiers lie within 
Fairview Cemetery, the Boyd Cemetery, the Trinity Episcopal Church 
Cemetery and the descended of many of these brave men still live in 
Buchanan and the surrounding areas.

         

In recognition of the importance of the Town of Buchanan's role in the 
Civil War and the role that the community's heritage plays today by 
instilling Civic Pride within the hearts of our residents, the Town 
Buchanan, Virginia hereby proclaims April 27, 28,29 2007 as a Civil War 
History Weekend.
