      I must take issue with your reported comment that the remarks made by
Robert Lamb were "just awful".
What did Lamb say that was not the absolute truth? Even conservatives like
yourself seem to feel that in order to placate the media, a negative spin
must be placed on comments like Lamb's This is in itself a form of political
correctness.  I would suggest that the word awful describes the utter
devastation and chaos left in Virginia and the South by armies under
Lincoln's command. Thousands of Virginia's finest citizen died defending the
Commonwealth from an unwarranted and unconstitutional invasion fomented by
Lincoln. The misery and poverty resulting from Lincoln remained in Virginia
for nearly 100 years. The South is still scrutinized by the Federal
government in areas such as the Voting Rights Act which realistically ceased
being needed years ago. The General Assembly did the right thing yesterday
by voting NO and not hopping on the Lincoln bandwagon. I would be in full
favor of an honest appraisal of Lincoln. But with this bicentennial
commission, it won't happen.
