*CIVIL WAR WEEKEND - - APRIL 27, 28, 29 2007*
As part of the month-long celebration of Confederate History Month,
The Town of Buchanan, Virginia and The Botetourt Artillery, Sons of
Confederate Veterans Camp 1701 in Buchanan, has scheduled a _/*Civil War
Weekend*/_ on April 27, 28 and 29, 2007. ALL Sons of Confederate
Veterans, their families and reenactors are cordially invited to attend.
If you have any kind of period presentation we ask you to come and help
with this living history celebration.
A CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT: The Botetourt Artillery and other camps will set
up a complete working, historically correct encampment in the alley
beside the Buchanan Theater in the downtown area. The tents will be set
up by 3-4 p.m. Friday and they will stay there for two nights, along
with necessary personnel. This will include cooking and all phases of
camp life from card playing to letter writing to making lead bullets.
Depending on the size of the encampment, the tents could extend to the
grassy area behind the theater also. Each tent will exhibit an
individual snapshot of "camp life" and at least three different types
of shelter demonstrations are planned. An invitation has been issued to
one of Virginia's largest sutlers to attend and local United Daughter of
the Confederacy will exhibit the "Daily lives and routine of the
civilian folks back home" during that period. Contacts have been made to
include a cannon firing demonstration and battle simulation of the
_/Battle of Buchanan/_ across the James River on Saturday afternoon.
Buggy rides and a romantic candle light historical tour have been
planned as well as live period music and a lot of other
surprises. General Robert E. Lee will address the troops on Saturday.
A half-mile stretch on The James will also be used as part of the
encampment and all Sons of Confederate Veterans and reenactors are
cordially invited to come and set up some kind of shelter -period if
possible- for the event and join in with promoting our history and
heritage. Merchants and establishments have adopted a Civil War theme
for the weekend with as much period dress as possible and an emphasis
the 1860-1865 timeline. The Buchanan Theater will start showing Civil
War movies on Friday and run them as long as they deem necessary,
through a Sunday matinee starting about 3pm. That the schedule should
coincide with whatever guest or guest speakers may be available. Some
movies under consideration are: "Gettysburg", "Gods & Generals",
"Somersby" (filmed at Grayledge in Buchanan and Lexington), and
"Shenandoah" to name a few. In connection with the movie, plans are
being studied to invite several of the movie stars and directors to the
three-day event.
For planning purposes, the "weekend" will start about 5 p.m. on Friday,
April 27th, all day long on Saturday April 28^th and at least through 11
a.m. on Sunday, April 29^th . (Camp church services). All camps and
re-enactors are asked to contact Jerry Huff of The Botetourt Artillery
at (540) 254-3304 or by e-mail at hufrap at rbnet.com for an assigned space
on the riverfront.
