SUFFOLK - Mayor Linda Johnson has decided not to sign a proclamation
marking April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
"It is my charge to do what is in the best interest of the city as a
whole," Johnson wrote in part of a prepared statement.
Every year, the Suffolk-based chapter of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans asks the mayor to sign a proclamation. Some mayors sign it.
Others don't.
Lee Hart, a member of Tom Smith Camp, the local unit of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans, was disappointed Johnson turned it down. He said
at least 1,500 soldiers from Suffolk and the former Nansemond County
enlisted to fight in the Civil War.
"I just think it's sad," he said. "It's a crime these people can't be
honored."
Johnson also wrote in her statement, "Following my recurring theme of
'One City,' it is my goal to work towards unity of all Suffolkians -
young and old, native or newcomer - of all heritages, faiths and
ethnicities."
